Down the steps to the Ganga

So many of us walk

Today, and everyday

It is swimming lessons for some

The burning of bodies for others

A river of eternity

Where life and death meet each other so often

The distinction between the two becomes blurred

If there's actually one at all

And the ashes of our foremothers

And our forefathers with them

Litter the water we bathe in, we work in, we drink

It is the giver of life

Both physically and spiritually

And I promise

Even when it is pure

And the ashes of all my foremothers

And all their foremothers

Have been erased from it completely

I can still taste the spirits

Of my Mothers Ganga
