I am an absolute sucker for snail mail, and I always have been.
Once, when I was quite young, my Grandma Dee asked me to go check her mail for her. After stumbling upon what was likely a pile of bills and the local newspaper (though I imagined to be hand-written letters from my grandma's friends and family) I was thrilled. I checked that mailbox every time I was at Grandma Dee's house since, and quite honestly, I can't help but open it and take a peek inside to this day. It's tradition.
That said, I couldn't help but be excited when I started to get my own mail. As a kid, it was usually either a birthday card or my report card, both of which were exciting to see.
As I got older, it turned into college mailers and credit card ads. Not quite as exciting, but I still loved the thrill of seeing my name on an envelope.
Now, I rarely get mail, but today I stumbled upon a diamond in the rough: a postcard from my friend Manuel, who's currently studying in Shanghai.
Manuel is the only person who ever sends me postcards, but it's something he never forgets whilst traveling. From London to Malta to Shanghai, he always takes the time to jot down a quick note and send it on its way to me. We text each other nearly every day, and maybe it's just me, but there's just something different about getting an unexpected postcard in the mail.
I guess when it comes down to it, I just find snail mail more meaningful than a text or a snapchat, which is probably why getting this postcard made my day today. It's rare to be able to say this, but today, I got mail!
