As some of you may know, I am spending my semester living in an apartment with the only two guys that are a part of my USAC program. Coincidentally, they are also the only people in our program who aren’t from the United States. Oskar of Germany and Giacomo of Italy are two wildly different people, but the three of us together make one heck of a team.
I have told so many stories about living with these two that has elicited the response “You HAVE to write about that in your blog today!” but for some reason, I never did. Tonight, I’m changing that, and am dedicating this blog post to my boys Giacomo and Oskar. Guys, please don’t hate me for sharing these stories.
One of my favorite memories of the boys is from early on in the semester. The three of us were in our living room, listening to some music and working individually on homework. All of a sudden, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira came on Giacomo’s shuffle, and immediately, the two of them were entranced. The reality of my existence disappeared to them as one took each part of the duet, serenading each other passionately in both Spanish and English. They danced and sang to each other for a performance that was simply unreal— I was only grateful to be lucky enough to sit there and watch it.
On a day-to-day basis, the boys are both averse to clothing. The instant he crosses the threshold into our apartment, Oskar’s shirt is off, never to return until necessary for school the next day. Giacomo, on the other hand, prefers to do his daily tasks— laundry, blow-drying his luscious locks, etc.— sans pants. They are the yin and yang of walking around our apartment without clothes.
Sometimes, I feel like I’m their mom. This past weekend I decided it was time to clean out the fridge, and that adventure made it as clear as ever that I live with two boys:
*Why is there an entirelyempty bottle of water in the fridge?*
"I didn't know where else to put it."
*What's this?*
"Oh it's my leftovers from the first week we were here. They've been bad for like 3 weeks but I didn't know what else to do with them so I just left them there."
*Is this jam old?*
"Yeah it's been moldy for like a week now but I've just been eating around it. I guess you can throw it away."
Sometimes I just wonder what would be growing inside the fridge, or how much moldy jam they would eat if I weren’t around.
More than anything, living with these two boys is entertaining. Honestly, I think their goal half the time is just to make sure I’m entertained. They are weird and funny, but they also care deeply about me, and I can’t imagine my semester here without them. Let’s hear it for the boys.
